RESERVING A STATIC IP ADDRESS
Everything that is connected to your network gets an IP address. An IP address typically looks like 999.99.999.xxx. The xxx will be different for each device. Sometimes you want a device to always have the same IP address every time the device connects to the network. A static IP address is one that does not change.
Shared Network Resources: Printers, scanners, and Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices benefit from static IPs so connected computers do not lose connection when IPs renew.
Network Equipment: Routers, switches, firewalls, and WiFi access points often use static IPs for easier management and to prevent configuration disruptions.
Security Systems (CCTV/IP Cameras): Security cameras or NVRs (Network Video Recorders) with static IPs ensure continuous monitoring without needing to re-configure IP address changes.

Internet of Things (IoT) Smart Home Devices: Smart home hubs or servers often use static IPs to ensure consistent, reliable management of connected device
Remote Access and VPNs: Essential for remote workers accessing an office network, ensuring a stable, recognized connection for security and reliability.
It used to me that you would set the IP in the device itself. If two devices end up with the same IP address it will cause all sorts of problems. A better method is to let your router RESERVE an IP address. The benefits of this is the router won't allow duplicate IP numbers, and if you move your equipment to another network you don't have to do any acrobatics to get it to connect.
