Snowbirds and Blue Stream DirecTV
Vista Royale owners have access to their DirecTV stream service year round anywhere in the country, not just when they are in Florida.
You may have gotten a confusing communication from Blue Stream addressed to their Snowbird customers regarding porting their Blue Stream Fiber TV package to a secondary location. We do not have Blue Stream Fiber TV, we have DirecTV through Blue Stream!
I have also heard several people say that they thought they were not up to the task of setting up the box in the secondary location. When doing this within the United States, this is usually a very easy process.
Complications arise when the TV is too old to work with the DirecTV box, or the TV is an "off" brand that does not use the standardized IR infrared signals for controlling power and volume and input signals making setting up the remote control a little more complex.
You will need:
Your DirecTV username and password that you created when you first set up your DirecTV service.
Your DirecTV Gemini box or another streaming device capable of running the DirecTV app such as an up to date Roku, a Firestick or a smart TV.

Connecting a Gemini Box
1. Connect the DirecTV box to your TV.
On a brand new box
Follow the instructions seen in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYrzZaXgjU8
On a box that has already been linked to your account.
Write down the model number and the manufacturing date found on labels on the back of the TV.
Connect the box to the TV with a high quality HDMI cable.
Make sure the HDMI cables are plugged in securely.
Use the TV's remote to select that HDMI input that you just connected..
Turn on the DirecTV box
You should see a picture from the directv box.
NO PICTURE!
Make sure you selected the correct HDMI input with the TV's remote.
Recheck the connections, the connection to the DirecTV box was very snug and required some strength to make a firm connection.
Try another HDMI connection on your TV.
I had always assumed that the box would work with any TV with an HDMI port, but I found that the DirecTV boxes were finicky and would not hook up to some older TVs. It works with my 2010 Sony but would not work with 2008 Sharp or a 2009 Vizio nor our 2015 projector. Those TVs all work with my Roku and Firestick streamers but I get no picture when hooking up to the DirecTV box.

2. Establish a network connection
If you use the same network name and password at both locations, your connection should be automatic.
If they differ, you will get a No Internet Connection message. Select Go to Settings and pick your network from the list and enter your password.
Intermittent connection Problems
Streaming is best when it is done over 5GHz WiFi band using a non DFS WiFi channel. If you are having intermittent connection problems this could be due to your router settings. Most streamers can't see 5GHz DFS channels, and if you using the 2.4 GHz band your streaming may cut out while you use other electronic devices like microwaves.

3. Set your streamer's remote control to match your TV.
If Ask to pair with new TV is turned on in your settings this usually is an automatic process. But if your Gemini remote is not controlling the TV's volume, input, and power functions you may need to go in and change some settings by hand.
From the Left menu on the home page.
Settings > System > Remotes&Devices > Program your Remote

Settings > System > Remotes&Devices > Program your Remote
What you do on this page depends on what equipment you have and how you are controlling it. Is it a simple TV setup or do you have external speakers?
Check these 3 settings if your remote is not controlling your equipment correctly.
1. Switch volume control
Choose between Off, TV, or Speakers (If speakers have been setup).
2. TV brand
Choose TV brand and go through the setup process below.
3. Speaker System brand
Choose Speaker System and go through the setup process below.
Setup Process.
If the brand is wrong, you can go to Standard option and enter your brand name until it appears on the list and follow the instructions on the screen. This method works great for major manufactures.
If the brand is correct and the remote still doesn't operate your TV you can use the Manual setting to enter the brand and model number. This is useful on "off" brands that don't use the same Infrared signals across all their models. If you need to use this method you might want to turn off "Ask to Pair with a new TV" to keep the remote from reverting to the setting that did not work.

4. (optional) Enable Consumer's Electronic Control (CEC) in your TV's Settings.
CEC allows your TV to be controlled over the HDMI connection. When CEC is turned on, pressing any button on the gemini remote will turn on the TV and the input will be automatically selected. In addition some of the newer smartTVs will reconize the DirecTV box as an IPTV provider and will control the DirecTV box with the TV's remote.
The method to activate CEC varies by manufacturer and age of your TV.
Samsung (Anynet+):
Settings > General > External Device Manager > Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) and switch it on.
Settings > All Settings > Connections> External Device Manager > Anynet+.
LG (SimpLink):
Settings > All Settings > Connection > Device Connection Settings > SimpLink (HDMI-CEC).
Sony (BRAVIA Sync):
Home > Settings > External Inputs > BRAVIA Sync settings > Toggle on BRAVIA Sync control.
TCL/Roku TV:
Settings > Channels & Inputs > Inputs > HDMI CEC > Switch on.
Vizio:
Menu > System > CEC.
Using a Smart TV's DirecTV app
This will only work on TVs that are new enough to run the latest version of DirecTV. My older smart TV will not run the current version of the DirecTV App. If your smartTV is too old, consider adding a streaming stick.
1. If not already installed, add the DirecTV app through your TV's app manager.
2. Sign in to the DirecTV app with your DirecTV username and password.

Dedicated Streaming Stick
1. If it is a new device follow the manufacturer's instructions to setup the device.
2. Download the DirecTV app.
3. Sign in to the DirecTV app with your DirecTV username and password.

Streaming Location
Understanding streaming location can be very abstract and complicated. Some streaming services base your location on your geographic location, some base your on you billing zip code, some services are a hybrid where you have to have a credit card with a billing zip code that matches your geographic location. Back in 2019 I had disconnected my traditional cable TV I had a heck of a time trying to get a streaming package to work. Most didn't offer ANY local channels at all. When I signed up with DirecTV here in Michigan I got Florida local channels! DirecTV could not provide me with my local channels and local sports until I went to my bank and got a credit card with a local zip code. So I was very happy that I got any ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and PBS with my Florida Bulk TV package when I first tried to use it in Michigan in 2026.
Another Example of location services is MLB's Detroit Sports Network required a Michigan billing address to sign up to watch Detroit Tigers in-market games, but this streams fine in Florida unless the the Tigers are playing the Miami Marlins. Then geographic location comes into play and I had to switch to DirecTV to view the Marlins games while I was in Florida. Last year's Detroit Tigers FanDuel subscription also required a Michigan billing address but would not play in Florida at all.
When I went to Michigan in March, I had unplugged all of my DirecTV boxes in Florida and tried setting my home location to my network in Michigan. The channels were still Florida-centric and the next day my account's home location had changed back to Florida. If you are not on your home network DirecTV will be limited to a maximum of 3 simultaneous streams with only 2 of those streams being shown on TVs. Some channels (BTN, Fox, Fox Business, Fox News, FS1, FS2, Starz, NHL) have stricter limitations.
When I left Florida for the season I brought one of the DirecTV gemini boxes with me. When I plugged it in, it started out with Florida channels, but overnight it transitioned to the local channels at my new zip code. It had local news, but not local sports. Local sports were still restricted. In the settings area where it used to show my billing and location zip code, it says location based on local WiFi. This surprised me since my initial experiments confirmed what Blue Stream said, that the service would remain Florida-centric at the seceondary residence.
Mixed Locations.
On some devices the locals remain Florida-centric and on other devices the local channels are the ones that are really local. On the DirecTV box, my iPad and my Android tablet, the local channels are correct for this zip code. On the DirecTV app on my smart TV and Roku, and in the Chrome browser on my Windows 11 PC, the locals are still Florida-centric.
Recording Local Channels (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC or PBS)
If you want to record something from local channels and your device is showing non-Florida local channels, it typically throws some kind of error, other times it works, with no rhyme nor reason as to why it works or doesn't work. .
If you want to setup a recording for a national program on a device showing the non-Florida local channel like ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC or PBS and you are getting error messages there is a work around. If one of your devices can see the Florida channels, set up the recording there and you can view it on ANY of your devices, even the ones showing non-Florida local channels.
Home Network.
When I did my initial experiment in March, I set my home location to Michigan to see if that would have any bearing on my channel lineup. What was disappointing was in the morning my home network had reverted to Florida. The reason this matters is that you can only have two TVs running DirecTV simultaneously if you are not on your home network and we have three members of our household so coordinating TV viewing would be a bit of a challenge.
Since I did my original experiment in March, I changed my billing information for my DirecTV add-ons to a Michigan based credit card and I have a DirecTV gemini box at this address and nobody is streaming on my account in Florida. I set my home network to the current network and it has been 48 hours and this is still my "home network".
If I was doing a controlled experiment I would have done one variable at a time, but with over 1000 miles separating the locations it was not feasible.
VPN
DirecTV stream is designed to work in the USA. It has been suggested that using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to disguise your location might allow you to stream elsewhere. VPNs are essential for dealing with public WiFi. VPNs are also useful when keeping your ISP out of the loop or to keep your ISP from throttling your traffic. VPN's usually come with a one to two year commitment and not all of them work with streaming. Even if they work with your streaming service now, there is no guarantee they will work a month from now. I tried IPVanish, which was highly recommended as being optimized for streaming. I could not get DirecTV nor MLB to work with IPVanish and had an extremely difficult time cancelling my trial subscription.
